Do your friends go crazy over your birthday cakes? Have they ever said “I wish I could do that?” If so, you’ve got a potential business to start from home.

If the artist in you loves to decorate cakes, why not use your talent and start a cake decorating business? Anyone can frost a cake, but not everyone can decorate the sweet creations.

Think of all the events in need of beautiful cakes: birthdays, anniversaries, weddings, graduations, engagements, retirements, religious celebrations and promotions. The opportunity is out there, you merely need to make your services known.

Cake supplies needed include cake pans, cake boards and a variety of decorating tubes and tips. Business supplies you’ll need include reliable transportation, business cards, flyers/brochures and if possible a website. The website isn’t necessary to start but is something you should work toward having to display your portfolio.

You will need to advertise to your target market. Newspaper ads and grocery store flyers are fine for some businesses with mass appeal. However cake decorators need to focus attention to the party planners. Bridal fairs, dress shops, party décor supply stores and banquet halls are good places to promote your business.

You may be able to participate in some collaborative marketing. The photography studio may allow you to leave some of your business cards at the front desk. In return you would give photography referrals to your cake customers.

If you enjoy working alone, a cake decorating business may be a good fit for you. Keep in mind, however that some customers can be somewhat challenging to work with. Despite best efforts to ensure you are both on the same page as far as requirements, some customers may have envisioned something entirely different. Strong communication skills are a must.

The downside to this business is competition. Competition is keen. With so many grocery stores and superstores with an in-house bakery you may have hard time matching their prices. Do not under valuate your time investment. Instead of trying to compete with the chain stores, set yourself apart by offering added personalize service.

This is one business where you truly can have your cake and eat it too!
